The 10-second tour

EdgeTest works in three steps. Describe your strategy in plain English, like "buy when the 50-day average crosses above the 200-day and sell at a 10 percent target". The AI turns it into exact rules. Then the engine tests those rules across roughly 10 years of real end-of-day market data and hands you a professional report in seconds.

You never write code. If you can describe your idea in a sentence, you can backtest it.

The free market pages

Market Today is a daily market cockpit: indices, sectors, India VIX, breadth, movers, 52-week extremes and FII/DII flows. Options Today covers the index options market: PCR, max pain, OI walls and the most active contracts. Stocks gives every F&O stock its own page combining the live option chain, implied vs realized volatility, delivery percentage, technicals, fundamentals and corporate filings. ETFs and funds gives the same treatment to 376 ETFs, REITs and InvITs, each with about ten years of history. IPO Watch tracks open and upcoming issues with category-wise subscription demand, plus an archive of how past issues did on listing day. The Screener answers plain-English screens like "profitable IT companies with PE under 25". Corporate Actions and Bulk Deals round out the picture.

During market hours these pages use exchange data delayed about 15 minutes; after the close they show the last session, always labelled with its date.

The Strategy Terminal

Sign in with Google and you land in the Strategy Terminal. There are two modes, Equity and Options, switchable at the top. In both, a chat with Ella sits on the left and a visual strategy builder on the right - they stay in sync, so you can talk OR click, whichever you prefer.

The builder is never empty: a proven starter strategy is always loaded, so you can press Run immediately and tweak from there. Tell Ella "make the stop loss 5 percent" or edit the number directly - same result.

04

Writing a good strategy

A complete equity strategy has four parts. The entry signal: when to buy, built from 50+ indicators (RSI, moving averages, MACD, Bollinger, Supertrend and more), combinable with AND/OR, plus optional fundamental filters like PE below 20. The exit rules: stop loss, target, maximum holding days, or a trailing stop. The universe: Nifty 50, Nifty 500, the whole listed market, sector baskets, or a single company. And the capital: a lump sum or a monthly/yearly SIP, with position sizing.

There is a second shape too, chosen at the top of the builder. Instead of buying on signals, hold a ranked basket: score every company on factors like 12-month momentum, return on equity or valuation, hold the best N of them, and rebalance weekly, monthly or quarterly. Each factor is turned into a percentile first, so no single measure can dominate just because its numbers are bigger.

For options, pick from 20 ready structures (straddles, strangles, iron condors, spreads and more) on NIFTY, BANKNIFTY, FINNIFTY, MIDCPNIFTY or NIFTY Next 50, choose the expiry style and entry timing, and set profit-taking and stop rules on the premium.

Options strategies can also be tested minute by minute instead of once a day. Switch How closely we watch from Daily to Minute in the entry step and the position opens at a time you choose, every rule is checked on each one-minute bar, and it can be squared off at a clock time - so a same-day strategy becomes testable, and a stop is seen the moment it is touched rather than at the close. It covers one index and a fixed archive of minute history, so the terminal shows which dates are available and clamps your period to them rather than quietly testing less than you asked for. Minute testing is part of Pro.

A worked example to type into the chat:

EdgeTest terminal - try this
> Buy Nifty 500 stocks when RSI drops below 30 and price is above the 200-day average. Stop loss 8 percent, target 25 percent, maximum hold 60 days.

Reading your results

CAGR is the average yearly growth rate of the portfolio over the whole test. For SIP strategies you get XIRR instead, the money-weighted yearly return. Maximum drawdown is the worst peak-to-bottom fall along the way - a 25 percent drawdown means at the worst moment the portfolio was down 25 percent from its high. Sharpe ratio is return per unit of risk; above 1 is generally good. Win rate is the percentage of trades that closed profitable, and profit factor is total money won divided by total money lost - above 1 means net profitable. Capital utilization shows how much of your money was actually deployed.

Every metric on the report has a plain-English tooltip, the equity curve is interactive, and the full trade log shows each entry, exit and reason - exportable as CSV.

06

The costs behind the numbers

Every number you see already has real trading costs deducted: brokerage, STT, exchange charges, SEBI fees, stamp duty, GST and slippage. The exact assumptions are disclosed in the cost card on every report.

Fills are deliberately conservative. If price gaps straight past your stop overnight, the simulation fills at the next open, not at your level. And if a single day touches both your stop and your target, the engine assumes the stop hit first. Real trading punishes optimism, so the backtest does too.

07

After the backtest

History keeps every run; select up to 4 and compare them side by side. Save the strategies you like. Portfolios goes one step further: run up to 5 saved strategies together on ONE account, sharing a single cash balance, a single margin pool and one timeline, with equity and options mixed. It is a real co-simulation rather than a sum of separate backtests - if one strategy is holding the cash, another genuinely cannot buy, and the report counts how often that happened and whether splitting the money helped at all.

And when a strategy earns your trust, track it with Daily Strategy Signals: track an equity strategy, an options strategy or a whole portfolio and every trading evening EdgeTest re-runs your rules on the new data and records what they would have done - signals, entries, exits - with a virtual portfolio, plus a morning email digest around 8:15 AM IST. It is forward testing with zero real money at risk.
