What Biocon does
A short, human-reviewed summary of the business, written from public sources. Background, not analysis, and not updated intraday.
business summary

Biocon is not primarily a formulations company: its core business, run through subsidiary Biocon Biologics, makes biosimilars, near-copies of complex biologic drugs like insulin and cancer antibodies, a far harder regulatory path than ordinary generics. It also majority owns Syngene, itself a separately NSE-listed company that sells no drugs of its own and instead runs contract research and manufacturing for other pharma, biotech and agrochemical companies worldwide.

1
1Sector

Pharma - Biosimilars & Biologics

2
2What it sells

Biosimilar insulins and monoclonal antibodies used in diabetes, oncology and immunology, plus, through Syngene, contract research, development and manufacturing services for other companies' drug candidates.

3
3Who buys it

Health systems, hospitals and distributors in many countries buying its biosimilars as lower-cost alternatives to original biologic drugs, plus other pharma, biotech and agrochemical companies that pay Syngene to run research and manufacturing on their behalf.

4
4How it earns

Profits from being a cheaper, harder-to-copy alternative to expensive patented biologic drugs once their patents expire; the tough manufacturing and regulatory approval process is itself a barrier that protects margins once a biosimilar is approved. Profitability moves with new biosimilar approvals in the US and EU, insulin pricing, and Syngene's client research revenue.

Implied vs realized volatility

The cash it actually made
Profit is an accounting figure; cash flow is what moved. Free cash flow is the cash from running the business less what was spent on plant and equipment, so it is what was left over to pay down debt or return to shareholders.
